FLY DRESSING

Fly Dressing is a huge subject on its own. It can be a very rewarding pastime and, from personal experience, sometimes very frustrating.

The best way to learn is from someone else. Books are fine up to a point but you will need advice from someone who knows the basics. Once you have learned a few basic patterns you can turn to books to expand your skills.

Sometimes there are classes run in the evening at your local hall where you can learn the basics and some of the more challenging patterns.

As far as trout are concerned nowadays the trend is for sparse patterns like Buzzers and lures for Rainbow. These tend to be easier to tie that the more traditional split-wing dry flies of times gone by.

Salmon patterns are of course much larger and generally more colourful. Their size will make them easier to work with but no less challenging.

You will remember the first fish you catch on a fly that you have tied, and it is especially nice if the feathers have come from quarry shot by you as well.
