General Appearance
A noble steady dog showing power, endurance and speed . They have a clean cut head , sloping shoulders, deep chest, short back and powerful hindquarters giving a thoroughbred appearance.
Characteristics
The breed originated from Germany at the end of the 19th century and is a cross between a Pointer (English) and the old German Pointer which themselves are crosses of the old Spanish pointer, English fox hound and bloodhound which accounts for the exceptionally keen nose of the German shorthaired pointer.
History
It was not until after 1946 that the GSP began to become generally known in the British Isles and was registered as a separate breed by the kennel club in 1954. The German shorthaired pointer Club organised the very first field trial in the same year followed by a full-scale field trial in 1955 which eventually led to the title of field trial champion being granted by the kennel club to German shorthaired pointers in 1962.
