The Mole Hole: British Moleskin Trousers

The Mole Hole: British Moleskin Trousers

The Mole Hole - An Honest Review

As we at SACS have said previously, supporting small local businesses is important so we are pleased to let members know about The Mole Hole’s products. This is an honest and unpaid-for review of their ladies side-fastening moleskin trousers, which one of our staff members has bought for themselves.

We found The Mole Hole from a good old-fashioned Google search; the search summary said: "The Mole Hole: highest quality traditional moleskin clothing. British-made, hand-tailored moleskin trousers, breeks, waistcoats for ladies & gents."

We clicked through to the website and were pleasantly surprised by the traditional, practical styling, and emphasis on durable cloth. Especially with women's clothing these days, there is too much focus on style over substance. Thin cords are no use in the field on a winter's day! But The Mole Hole offers both style and substance.

After getting in touch with the incredibly helpful owner, Gini, we placed a 'try-before-you-buy' order. This genius option allows you to see, feel and try on a pair of trousers before placing an order, with no up-front charge (you pay £5 extra later on when you place an order, to cover their costs in sending the test pair out to you). Gini's designs are cut and sewn to order, so this helps them and the customer. After checking the measurements online, we ordered a pair of side-fastening ladies moleskins, and a few days later the try-on test pair arrived.

The quality of the moleskin fabric is excellent. Thick and durable, warm and practical. This is proper, old-fashioned moleskin, not fashion rubbish. We found the original fit a little off, but Gini offers a no-extra-charge pattern 'tweaking' service; with amended measurements sent off to Gini by email, we placed our order with confidence. When the final pair of trousers arrived, they fit perfectly; we opted to have them hemmed to a custom length at a charge of just £5.00, but you can buy them unhemmed if you prefer to do this yourself.

We've worn these trousers throughout the winter, and they have stood up to the worst weather and still look brand new. Over time they mould to your shape. We found no shrinkage in the wash; the trousers iron well and the extra features - tartan ribbon trim on the internal seams, horn buttons, deep cotton-lined pockets that you can actually use (most ladies trouser pockets are next to useless!) - mean these trousers are, in our opinion, market-leading. The men's styles are made of the same fabric with all the same options.

We can't recommend Gini and The Mole Hole highly enough if you are looking for long-lasting, hard-wearing, comfortable moleskin trousers for a reasonable price (these trousers will last for years, so cost-per-wear is very low). Also available are shirts, waistcoats and breeks. You can call Gini direct on 01989 730376, or visit the website link above.
