SACS: Tail Docking Update

The Scottish Parliament this afternoon voted on the draft Prohibited Procedures on Protected Animals (Exemptions) (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2017; this proposes to allow the tail docking up to the age of five days of spaniel and HPR puppies that are likely to be used as working dogs, with docking limited to the end-third of the tail.

Cabinet Secretary Roseanna Cunningham moved to support the legislation with a robust speech asking MSPs to set aside any personal prejudice against shooting in order to place dog welfare first, and follow the direction of the ECCLR Committee which voted seven-to-three in favour. The vote was 86 for and 29 against, with a number of abstentions. This is a huge success for everyone who has been involved in the long fight for justice for our working dogs; well done to all, and thank you to the majority of MSPs who voted sensibly.
