Generally speaking, a gundog works with someone shooting in order to locate, flush and/or retrieve the quarry. Labrador Retrievers, Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels (and crosses between the two) are most often found standing on the peg with the gun, or working cover with beaters to flush game to waiting guns. Some dogs will do both. All are trained to retrieve with a ‘soft’ mouth, so as not to damage the carcass.

You will find many other breeds working alongside guns, including Flat Coat Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Pointer and Setter breeds that hunt by scent and are bred to ‘freeze’ instead of chasing quarry, and multi-tasking HPRs. Here at SACS, we have also seen terriers on driven shoots, with varying degrees of success.

Why Gundog owners should join SACS

Outside the shooting season, many people compete their gundogs in trials and tests. SACS will become more involved in this over the coming year or two – another reason to join HERE today.
